About This Course
Originally part of our comprehensive online course, Equine-Assisted Therapy Clinical Specialist (EATCS), this module was developed specifically to integrate Physiotherapy (PT) principles within Equine-Assisted Services (EAS). Recognising the value this knowledge brings to practitioners across all EAS fields, we chose to make this module openly available to support safe, informed, and clinically grounded practice.
This course is for anyone working in Equine-Assisted Services who wants to better understand movement, posture, muscle tone, and the safe therapeutic use of equine movement. No physiotherapy background is required.
We believe that good education strengthens safety, protects clients and equines, and supports healthy professional boundaries. For this reason, the course includes essential topics such as precautions, risks, indications and contraindications, safety in the equine environment, securing clients, and correct mounting procedures.
This course will not qualify you as a physiotherapist or to practise EAPT, but it will help you recognise what can be safely addressed in your sessions and when referral to a professional is necessary.
If you are seeking introductory knowledge about EAS, we recommend beginning with our Core Principles of EAS online course.

LEARN HOW TO DO IT
Join this unique online course, offering a targeted curriculum that delivers essential physiotherapy-based knowledge and practical skills to enhance your EAS practice. Designed to support professionals in applying PT principles within Equine-Assisted Services, this course is accessible from anywhere in the world.

What Will You Learn?
-
Core Therapeutic Concepts and Physiotherapy Principles
The course begins with essential physiotherapy principles adapted to Equine-Assisted Therapy (EAT), focusing on posture, muscle tone, developmental kinesiology, and neuromotor control. You will explore how physiotherapy frameworks guide safe, clinically reasoned intervention in EAS and how equine movement can support functional outcomes for clients across a wide range of conditions. -
Motor and Postural Development Across Life Stages
You will delve into motor development from infancy to adulthood, learning how to recognise typical and atypical movement patterns and how these affect therapy planning. EAT will be presented as a highly effective method for improving postural control, balance, muscle tone regulation, coordination, and functional mobility. Through mounted work and the therapeutic use of equine movement, you will learn strategies to support clients with neurological, orthopaedic, or developmental needs. -
Application of Developmental Kinesiology in EAT
A key component of the course is understanding how developmental kinesiology shapes therapy decisions. You will learn how to select and adapt therapeutic positions on the equine’s back to activate specific postural responses, support missing motor milestones, and avoid reinforcing pathological patterns such as abnormal extension or excessive co-contraction. -
Case Studies and Real-World Applications
Real-life clinical case studies—including clients with hypotonia, cerebral palsy, developmental delays, and other neurological challenges—illustrate how physiotherapy principles can be applied effectively within EAT. These examples show how therapists analyse movement, choose equines, select positions, and modify pace, terrain, or stride length to achieve specific therapeutic goals. -
EAPT Session Structure and Clinical Reasoning
You will learn how to structure EAPT sessions safely and purposefully, integrating assessment, equine selection, therapeutic positioning, corrections, and progression. The course shows how multiple therapeutic goals can be addressed simultaneously through the combined effects of mounted work, sensory input, and rhythmic equine movement. -
The Therapeutic Value of the Equine Environment
While the course is primarily focused on mounted physiotherapy techniques, you will also gain insight into the benefits of the equine environment itself. Understanding equine behaviour, movement quality, and safe handling practices contributes to ethical, effective, and well-regulated EAPT sessions that support both client development and equine well-being.
Your gained knowledge
Created by an experienced physiotherapist, this course equips anyone working in Equine-Assisted Services (EAS) with practical PT-based knowledge and skills to enhance their practice and improve client outcomes. Participants will gain the following competencies:
-
Physiotherapy-Informed Clinical Reasoning – Learn to analyse posture, muscle tone, balance, and movement patterns, and apply physiotherapy principles to guide safe, purposeful intervention using equine movement.
-
Support for Functional Motor Skills – Develop techniques to promote postural control, coordination, core stability, gait-related abilities, and other motor skills essential for daily function across different age groups.
-
Application of Developmental Kinesiology – Understand key developmental milestones and apply this knowledge when selecting therapy positions, adjusting movement challenges, and promoting healthy motor organisation.
-
Flexible Session Structure and Adaptability – Gain skills to structure and adapt sessions according to individual client needs, using mounted therapeutic positions and clinically reasoned modifications of speed, stride, terrain, and direction.
-
Client Assessment and Goal Setting – Acquire PT-informed assessment and goal-setting tools that support meaningful progress tracking and help determine when referral to a physiotherapist is needed.
-
Safe and Ethical Practice in EAS – Understand best practices for safety, equine welfare, indications and contraindications, and ethical conduct in EAS to protect the well-being of both clients and equines.
